The 18-year-old is recovering in hospital while police investigate the incident. The assailant fled before officers arrived.
An assault on a Saskatoon Transit bus on Wednesday afternoon sent a man to hospital with a stab wound.
At 5:43 p.m., police responded to a report that a person had been stabbed on a city bus at the intersection of 12th Street East and Broadway Avenue.
“Arriving officers observed the victim being attended by Medavie Health Services and Saskatoon Fire,” police said in a Thursday news release.
The victim, an 18-year-old man, was taken to hospital where “he is believed to be recovering in stable condition,” police said.
The suspect had fled before police arrived. The serious assault unit continues to investigate.
Responding to the incident on Thursday, Saskatoon Transit stated that staff involved are being provided with post-incident supports.
“Fortunately, the transit operator was not injured or directly involved in the incident,” the release stated.
“Saskatoon Transit takes all incidents of violence on the transit system very seriously.”
Saskatoon Transit has experienced 124.5 negative interactions per one million rides, the release said, noting one interaction “may include three or more types of incidents.”
Negative interactions are identified as intoxication, verbal altercations, acts of aggression, assaults, bodily fluid, harassment, fare disputes and road rage.
In response to the rise in negative interactions, Saskatoon Transit has provided supervisor ride-alongs on some routes. The Saskatoon fire department Community Support Officers program will target frequent incident areas this summer. Commissionaires and Transit supervisors have increased patrols at the downtown transit terminal and entrances to the Customer Service Centre, and expended to the Market Mall and Confederation Mall terminals.
