An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital on Wednesday, after he was stabbed while riding a city bus.
According to police, officers were called at 5:43 p.m. for a report of a stabbing on a Saskatoon Transit bus at the corner of Broadway Avenue and 12th Street East in the Nutana neighbourhood.
The attacker had already fled by the time police arrived, and the victim was treated at the scene by paramedics and firefighters before being taken to hospital.
Police said he is believed to be recovering in stable condition.
The stabbing is under investigation by the Saskatoon Police Service’s Serious Assault Unit.
The Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents bus drivers in Saskatoon, raised the alarm in April about the increasing rates of violence among passengers.
Starting in July, community support officers will be riding some buses in the city to offer increased security on the routes where incidents occur most frequently.
In 2023, 110 city buses were equipped with barriers to help protect drivers from assault.
