September: Free Saskatoon Transit for elementary and under kids

To save local families some money and boost ridership on buses, the City of Saskatoon is making transit fees free for kids in Grades 8 and under, starting on Sept. 1.

The free fares apply to all Saskatoon Transit and Access Transit services, and kids won’t need to show any documentation when boarding a bus. Currently, children up to Grade 8 are charged $2.25 per bus trip, and kids under five ride for free.

The move was approved at a council meeting in June, and the city said the change brings Saskatoon in line with other jurisdictions in Canada, including Regina.

“The goal of the program is to make public transit more accessible and affordable for Saskatoon families,” Michael Moellenbeck, Saskatoon’s transit director, said in a statement.

“By removing the cost barrier, we’re able to provide all children the opportunity to get around the community safely and easily, whether it’s to school, extracurricular activities, or family outings.”

The city said Saskatoon Transit will work closely with school boards and other organizations to determine the program’s impact and identify any areas for improvement. A report is expected to come before council next summer.

This summer also saw the launch of Saskatoon’s new transit safety plan, aiming to keep operators and passengers safe after some concerning incidents on city buses.
